The idea for the Don’t Ashtray began when I first pondered the topic of quitting smoking some years ago. When it comes to cigarettes, it seems that most solutions to the problem of quitting lack elegance. The multitude of chemical chewing gums, placebos and band-aids commonly found on the market are awkward at best in their attempt to deliver their own brand of medicine. The concept for this ashtray employs the power of graphic suggestion in order to elicit a Pavlovian reaction which might allow users to continue practicing their pleasure/habit while raising a question at the same time. Perhaps a quiet, but repetitive reminder of the implications of their actions would lead to a considered decision to live in a healthier manner. Designed for Kikkerland, Inc. Photos by Clint Blowers.
